Your car, truck, or SUV takes quite a beating from the road and the natural elements. Rust typically starts out as a small, unsightly nuisance, but if untreated, rust can ruin your vehicle’s appearance as well as its structural integrity. As soon as you see those tiny brown spots start to emerge, it’s time to start looking for auto body rust repair shops.
Treating rust on a vehicle can be a very labor-intensive procedure. Rather than take this challenge on at home, take your vehicle to our trusted technicians at one of our 6 Auto Body Shops in Chester County PA, or our 2 Body Repair Shops in Montgomery County. Not only do we have the tools to get the job done, we also bring experience dealing with vehicle rust problems to each and every job, which can really pay off when it comes to restoring your vehicle to its original showroom shine.
The Rust Repair Process In Three Basic StepsWhile every rust treatment job can present its own set of unique challenges, the process to completely remove rust from your vehicle typically follows a fairly uniform process that can be summarized in three steps.
Strip the RustAny paint covering and surrounding the rust spot are stripped bare. Even though only small rust sports may be visible, there a good chance that the surrounding underlying metal has also oxidized. Stripping can be done with either a soda or bead blast, or the rust can be removed with a paint stripper or dual action sander. The primer and paint both need to be removed, and smooth surface is made between the unpainted and surrounding painted areas. Once a smooth surface is made, phosphoric acid is sprayed on to remove any microscopic particles that remain.
Apply PrimerA minimum of three coats of primer is applied to the surface, with a few minutes allowed between coats in order for the previous coat to set. “Direct-to-metal” (DTM) primer is the best way to ensure that you get an even coating of primer to serve as the foundation for the new paint. The primer will have to dry overnight.
Apply New Car PaintAs many coats of new paint as are needed are applied in order to achieve the desired look. The new paint must then be buffed to blend with the old. Clear coat protectant is applied as needed, and the new paint is allowed to cure for at least 48 hours. This is definately a step that should be left to a professional car painter.
In all honesty, unless you are an experienced auto body repair technician, it’s always best to leave rust repair to professional auto body rust repair shops. A mistake as simple as touching dry primer with a bare fingertip can cause lasting problems. Most people only want to sand and repaint their vehicles once. Our experts will get the job done right the first time, every time.
